Here is a brief history of Harpel's
Our new Harpel's Kodak Digital Imaging Center represents the latest advance in the storied history of one of Lebanon's finest retail businesses. Harpel's had its humble beginnings when founder Luther Grant Harpel began a portrait, commercial and instantaneous photography business at 8th and Willow Streets in Lebanon in 1899. The addition of a portrait studio and a custom framing business soon followed. Under son Donald Harpel's direction, the business grew and moved into larger facilities in the Sons of America Building at 757 Cumberland Street. The third generation, David Harpel, took over the business in 1955. David was faced with the challenging task of rebuilding the business after a devastating fire destroyed the 757 location in November, 1990. Harpel's rebuilt itself and continued to be a mainstay supplier to Lebanon families and businesses from a new location at 767 Cumberland Street in downtown Lebanon, plus a second location at the Lebanon Plaza Mall. By now the business included additional products and services such as office supplies and furniture, greeting cards, and photo equipment and supplies. This full line product business eventually moved to new larger quarters, the new Harpel's Building in April, 1993. The 4th generation Harpel, son Richard Harpel took over the business in 19xx. With the growth in technology and other industry advances, Harpel's made a Corporate decision to essentially get back to basics and concentrate its business on "image" focused business entities. And now the evolvement of Harpel's takes yet another step into the future with the new Harpel's Kodak Digital Imaging Center at the Kmart/Lowe's Plaza. Harpel's has been a mainstay of Lebanon families and businesses for over 4 generations. "And there's many more to come", states Richard (Rick) Harpel, CEO and President.
